How to Motivate Your Child to Do Homework 00000-46
It’s common among children to avoid doing school works because they don’t have the motivation to do so. There are a lot of distractions now and they can’t focus anymore because of the outside factors that affect their interests. Plus, they are in the process of growing up and figuring things out so they tend to be disturbed by their curiosity, too. But don’t worry, here’s how you’ll motivate your child to do homework!
1. Get into the practice of doing it daily Practice makes perfect, as they say. It would be exhausting at first on your child’s part because of their disinterest towards it but eventually, if they already got used to it, it will be effective as it will already become a part of their life – a habit. You can set a schedule, an hour or two in a day, where your child has to focus just on doing their homework. You might as well remove all the distractions around, especially their gadgets, so that it won’t be so difficult for them to pay attention to what they have to do. via kqed.org
2. Make a game of Math and spelling away from homework time Most people aren’t fond of studying because it’s boring. And perhaps that’s also the reason why your child finds it hard to do their homework. Studying has to be done on a specific time, and people just can’t force themselves to be interested into a certain activity, right? So do it casually. When you’re at a grocery store, you can teach your child Math by letting them count the money to be paid. You can also multiply the numbers on a plate number of the car in front of yours while the whole family is travelling to somewhere and whoever guesses the right answer first wins. Or you can also try spelling game. via smartparenting.com.ph
3. Have their own personalised homework space It’s much easier for children to focus and be motivated when they’re working on their own space because they are free to surround themselves with things that give energy to them or that they feel comfortable with. So provide them even just a simple table and place it to where they are happy to work at (at their bedroom or any room they can be alone) then ask them to personalise it and put everything that they need for their homework on the side, like pencils, pens, books, and so on, and that’s it. via educatemidland.org
 4. Sit with your child for the first 15 minutes of homework to get them started Sometimes, children feel unmotivated because they feel hopeless, like they’re struggling alone. Lend your child 15 minutes of your time and accompany them while they do their homework. Answer their questions if ever there’s something they’re confused about or help them find the answer if you don’t know the answer as well. Make them feel like they can always go to you whenever there’s a problem encountered. It can also help your relationship grow deeper. via indiatoday.in
5. Praise them when they do their homework well! When our efforts are acknowledged, it makes us feel good. It’s the same with children. In fact, it actually has more impact to them than to adults. Expert says that praising your child can make them achieve more and exert more effort to be successful. So next time you see your child doing homework, praise them, but only if they did well. Don’t praise just for the sake of praising, it will have a negative outcome. You can tell them encouraging words instead if they didn’t, it will make them motivated as well. via pinterest.com
6. Enforce consequences if homework isn’t done If your child didn’t or doesn’t want to do their homework, confiscate their gadgets, or anything that they can’t attain to lose, then return it when they are already done with their homework. This is quite harsh in some way because they might get angry at you or might hate you but if it’s the only way for them to finish it, do it. Their anger fades away anyway. via kidspot.co.nz
7. If they refuse to do homework, do incidental homework instead! If they refuse to do their homework, ask them to do something instead – something that they don’t want to do, like household chores! You can ask them to wash the dishes or sweep the floor, or clean the bathroom or fold the laundry! It’s one less responsibility for us mums if they insist not doing their homework! via parentcircle.com
8. Use bribery ‘We’ll eat at McDonald’s if you finish your homework by 7!’ and other things like that. Bribery always works, especially to children. You can use it to motivate your child to do homework and believe me, it will not fail. Use this in moderation, though. Bribery should be your last option. via shutterstock.com So, do you have more tips on to motivate your child to do homework?
