Grow Flowers and Food Everywhere You Go With DIY Seed Bombs
Do you ever see ugly, blank, vacant lots and think about how much nicer they would look if they were turned into gardens? The seed bomb is a cheap, natural and organic weapon for the guerrilla gardener in all of us.
You will only need a few ingredients and less than an hour to create your perfect seed bomb.
Supplies
You will need four parts clay to one part soil and one part seed.
-4oz Air Dry Clay
-1oz Potting Soil
-1oz Seeds
Steps
1.Spread out the clay so that it is large enough to pour the dirt onto.
2. Pour the dirt onto the clay and then pour seeds on top of the dirt.
3. Fold together and knead until the mixture is thoroughly mixed together.
4. Roll out into a ¾ inch log and make a cut every ½ inch. Roll each section into a ball.
5. Let sit in the sun to dry out if necessary and then toss where you’d like them to grow.
Tips
Be selective about which plants you use. Seeds of plants that are native to the area are much more likely to grow and less likely to endanger the bird/insect populations as well as the environment. It is important not to choose plants that would become invasive in the area that you are bombing. Choose types that will grow well in the climate you are in. If you are choosing a spot that is in full sun, make sure to get seeds that grow best in full sun. Use an assortment of seeds because not all the seeds will sprout.
The clay must cover everything. Birds and other animals are less likely to eat the seeds if they are covered in clay. Protecting your seeds with clay will give your seeds the best chance to germinate. Once the seeds are ready to germinate, they will be able to break through the clay and spread their roots into the ground.
Timing is everything. Spring is the best time to bomb your yard or public spaces. Try timing your bombings before heavy rainfall to ensure seed germination.
This is an easy way to get seeds for free! There are seed exchanges in different towns and cities throughout the United States. You can ask your local food coop if they are involved in a seed exchange.
Once you have made your seed bombs, enjoy the pleasure of creating small flower and food gardens everywhere you go. Let’s work together to make the world a more colorful place!
